The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially inaugurated its Paramedics Ambulance Department, celebrating the addition of new paramedics during a ceremony at their Suva headquarters.
The NFA’s Chief Executive Officer, Puamau Sowane, highlighted that the new department was established to enhance the effectiveness of emergency medical responses, which were previously managed by operational officers. He emphasized the importance of oversight in utilizing government funding wisely.
The primary objective of the newly formed department is to provide comprehensive training to professionals, enabling them to manage medical emergencies with greater proficiency. Sowane noted that a dedicated manager now leads the paramedics department, and they have allocated space within the fire station to build a specialized center for paramedic operations. While the department currently lacks specialized paramedics, several firefighters have received training from the Ministry of Health.
The Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Health Services Department aims to support both victims of incidents and firefighters during emergencies. Sowane explained that paramedics will be present at fire scenes to ensure the safety and care of everyone involved.
In addition to the nine ambulances already in service, the NFA plans to introduce six more specialized paramedic ambulances to enhance their capabilities. These ambulances are uniquely designed not only for patient transport but also to provide pre-hospital care.
In his closing remarks, Sowane urged the public to exercise caution during the upcoming festive season to prevent fire-related incidents.
This establishment signifies a positive step toward improving emergency medical services in the community, making it a safer environment for all, particularly during times of celebration. The focus on training and readiness highlights the commitment of the NFA to effectively respond to emergencies.
Summary: The NFA has launched its Paramedics Ambulance Department, adding new paramedics and enhancing emergency medical response capabilities. With a plan to introduce more ambulances and provide better training, the initiative aims for improved care for victims and firefighters. Community safety remains emphasized as the festive season approaches.
