The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially launched its Paramedics Ambulance Department and has badge new paramedics at their headquarters in Suva. NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane emphasized that the new department aims to enhance the management of medical emergencies by properly training professionals to respond to various situations effectively.
Previously, the ambulance services were provided by operational officers without a dedicated structure, which led to inefficient use of government resources. The establishment of this specialized department signifies a significant shift toward improved emergency medical services.
Sowane noted that the department is now led by a manager paramedic, which brings professionalism to the forefront of their operations. A portion of the fire station has been designated for the construction of a new paramedics center, illustrating the commitment to advancing emergency response services. Although specialized paramedics are still being developed, some firefighters have received training through the Ministry of Health.
The new department aims to support victims and first responders during emergencies. Paramedics will be stationed at incidents, providing immediate care to both victims and firefighters, showcasing a comprehensive approach to emergency response.
Currently, there are nine operational ambulances, with plans to introduce six additional paramedic ambulances to bolster their capabilities. These ambulances are designed for pre-hospital care, ensuring that they serve not only as transport vehicles but also as facilities equipped for immediate medical interventions.
In light of the festive season, Sowane urged the public to exercise caution to prevent fire incidents, highlighting the NFA’s commitment to community safety.
This initiative reflects a proactive approach by the NFA to enhance emergency services and better protect the community. The establishment of the Paramedics Ambulance Department is a positive step toward providing timely and effective emergency medical assistance, and the planned expansion of the ambulance fleet will further solidify their capabilities in serving the public.
