The National Fire Authority (NFA) officially launched its new Paramedics Ambulance Department and inducted new paramedics at its headquarters in Suva today. This establishment comes as part of the NFA’s efforts to enhance medical emergency response through improved training and organization.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane pointed out that the Ambulance Department was previously managed by operational officers, which led to inefficiencies in the utilization of government funding. The newly created department aims to provide rigorous training to staff, enabling them to handle medical emergencies more effectively.

Sowane emphasized the importance of having a dedicated managerial position for paramedics in order to improve operational output. The NFA has allocated space in fire stations to build a new center for paramedics, while acknowledging that while they do not yet have specialized paramedics, some firefighters have received training through the Ministry of Health.

The newly formed Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Health Services Department is intended to ensure care for both victims of accidents and firefighters during emergency situations. Paramedics will be positioned as first responders on-site during fire incidents to provide immediate support.

In addition to the current fleet of nine ambulances, the NFA plans to introduce six more paramedic ambulances to enhance their service capabilities. These new ambulances are designed not only for transportation but also to include pre-hospital care features, reflecting the evolving role of paramedic services.

As the festive season approaches, Sowane urged the public to prioritize safety and take preventive measures against fire incidents, highlighting the authorities’ commitment to raising awareness and readiness for emergencies.

This initiative from the NFA demonstrates a proactive approach to enhancing emergency services in the community, ultimately fostering a safer environment and better preparedness for medical emergencies.

Summary: The National Fire Authority has launched its Paramedics Ambulance Department and has inducted new paramedics to improve emergency medical responses. The initiative aims to enhance training and efficiency in handling accidents, with plans to expand their fleet of ambulances. Sowane called for public awareness to prevent fire incidents during the festive season.
