The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially launched its Paramedics Ambulance Department and has introduced new paramedics at their headquarters in Suva. The Chief Executive Officer of NFA, Puamau Sowane, highlighted that the department was previously managed by operational officers, underscoring the need for more stringent oversight to ensure government funds are utilized effectively.

Sowane explained that the primary objective of establishing this new department is to increase training for professionals to improve their management of medical emergencies. He noted that the creation of the Paramedics department reflects the NFA’s commitment to enhancing their service delivery.

“We decided to form this new department as we now have a dedicated paramedic manager leading the team. A section of the fire station has been allocated for constructing a new center for paramedics,” Sowane stated. While the department currently lacks specialized paramedics, several firefighters have received training in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

The Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Health Services Department is designed to provide immediate care for both victims and firefighters in the event of an incident. “During a fire, our paramedics will be on standby at the scene to assist both those affected by the fire and our own firefighters,” Sowane added.

NFA operates nine ambulances and is planning to introduce six additional paramedic ambulances to bolster their services. Sowane pointed out that these ambulances are specially designed not only for patient transport but also for pre-hospital care.

In conclusion, Sowane urged the public to exercise caution during the festive season to prevent fire-related incidents.

This establishment of the Paramedics Ambulance Department signifies a positive advancement in emergency response capabilities, aiming to improve medical care and support during emergencies. By investing in training and resources, the NFA is taking crucial steps toward enhancing public safety and welfare.

Summary: The NFA has inaugurated a new Paramedics Ambulance Department in Suva, aimed at improving medical emergency responses by training more professionals. Nine existing ambulances are in service, with plans to add six more, emphasizing the NFA’s commitment to effective emergency care and public safety.
