The Constitutional Office Commission has approved the formation of an independent selection panel tasked with evaluating and narrowing down applicants for the crucial role of Commissioner of Police. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who serves as Chairperson of the Commission, announced that the panel’s assessment report will be reviewed before a recommendation is made to the President.

Rabuka noted that the Commission received a total of 30 applications for the Commissioner position, including four from women candidates, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity in law enforcement leadership.

Additionally, the Prime Minister mentioned that the Commission is in the process of reviewing potential candidates for the role of Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, following the resignation of Barbara Malimali. This decision aligns with Section 75(6) of the Constitution, which mandates that the Chairperson must either be a current judge or someone qualified to fulfill that role.

Furthermore, Rabuka stated that the Commission has also approved recommendations from an independent committee regarding the remuneration and allowances for individuals appointed to act in constitutional positions, in line with Section 136 of the 2013 Constitution.

This proactive approach by the Constitutional Office Commission not only ensures that the highest standards are upheld in appointing key public officials but also enhances transparency and accountability in government operations.

The emphasis on the inclusion of women in leadership roles is particularly noteworthy, signaling a positive shift towards gender equality in governance. With these efforts, there is hope for a more competent and diverse leadership that will effectively serve the interests of the people.
