The NaVualiku initiative, also known as the ‘Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu,’ officially opened its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday.
Situated in the JKS Building, the inauguration was led by Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, who oversees the program.
“This office symbolizes more than just a new space; it signifies our commitment to the area where we aim to create a positive impact, devise strategies, mobilize resources, and establish a foundation for sustainable growth,” stated Mr. Gavoka. He emphasized that the ministry’s goal extends beyond attracting more visitors to Vanua Levu; it is also focused on enhancing the lives of local residents.
“The office will play a crucial role in ensuring that the benefits of the NaVualiku programme reach every community on this island,” he added.
In a related announcement, Stefano Mocci, the World Bank Group country manager for Fiji, revealed that the project is backed by a US$200 million financing package from the World Bank. The initiative will be implemented in three phases over the next ten years.
He noted the World Bank’s dedication, along with key partners and stakeholders, to assisting the Government of Fiji in transforming Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism center. The initiative aims to generate employment opportunities, particularly for women and youth, attract local and international investments, and stimulate economic growth to enhance the quality of life for Fijians on the island.
“Beyond financing, we are also contributing our global expertise and experience to support the execution of this project,” said Mr. Mocci. He added that this new office is vital to the work ahead, facilitating improved results on the ground, and enhancing collaboration while nurturing stronger partnerships in the northern region.
Mocci expressed pride in supporting Fiji’s development goals under the ‘Look North’ policy, aimed at strengthening the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
