New Office Launches to Transform Fiji’s Vanua Levu Tourism

The NaVualiku initiative, officially known as the ‘Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu’, inaugurated its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday. The new office, located at JKS Building, was opened by Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, under whose ministry the programme operates.

Gavoka emphasized that the office signifies more than just a physical space; it embodies a commitment to making a meaningful impact in the region. He noted that the programme aims to not only attract more tourists to Vanua Levu but also to enhance the quality of life for local residents. “This office will play a crucial role in ensuring that the benefits of the NaVualiku programme extend to every community on the island,” he stated.

In terms of funding, Stefano Mocci, country manager for the World Bank Group in Fiji, announced that the US$200 million financing for the project is primarily provided by the World Bank. The NaVualiku initiative is designed to be carried out over three phases within the next decade.

Mocci highlighted the Bank’s dedication to supporting efforts to transform Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism hub, which aims to create employment opportunities, particularly for women and youth, while attracting investment and stimulating economic growth for the benefit of Fijians in the region. “Along with financial backing, we are also offering our global and regional expertise to assist in the project’s implementation,” he remarked.

He underscored the importance of the new office as a key element in facilitating better coordination and collaboration among partners and stakeholders to achieve tangible results in the area. The initiative aligns with Fiji’s ‘Look North’ policy aimed at enhancing the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
