The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) has appointed Vui Gemma Nelson, a legal expert from Samoa, as its new Ocean Adviser, under the chairmanship of Palau. AOSIS, which represents 39 small island and low-lying coastal developing states, plays a significant role in international climate negotiations, advocating for policies aimed at mitigating climate change and protecting ocean resources.

Vui’s appointment comes as AOSIS transitions to new leadership, with Ilana Victorya Seid of Palau taking up the role of AOSIS Chair. Ambassador Seid is recognized for her strong commitment to blue diplomacy and equitable ocean governance, vital areas that resonate with Vui’s expertise.

Expressing her enthusiasm, Vui stated, “I’m excited to join the AOSIS team under Palau, and I’m looking forward to learning and contributing.” She brings to this role ten years of experience in international law, ocean policy, and multilateral diplomacy, having previously supported various international initiatives related to climate change.

A notable aspect of Vui’s background includes her involvement in the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative and work with multiple UN conventions. She has also served as an advisor in New Zealand’s Permanent Mission to the UN and as a Pacific Ocean Adviser for Samoa and Palau.

Vui highlighted the critical role that AOSIS and the Pacific Small Island Developing States play, particularly in advocating for vital issues like marine biodiversity and loss and damage funding due to climate impacts. Her insight reflects a broader sentiment expressed by regional leaders, such as Tuvalu’s Prime Minister Feleti Teo, who recently emphasized the urgent need for collective action to address the challenges posed by climate change on ocean health.

In her new position, Vui will focus on coordinating negotiations and technical work surrounding ocean governance and sustainable blue economy priorities. Her intention to amplify the collective voice of small island nations in international decision-making is pivotal, especially as these states confront existential threats from climate change and environmental degradation.

Overall, Vui’s appointment is a beacon of hope for the future of AOSIS, fostering unity and strategic collaboration among small island nations. Her commitment to ensuring that the voices of these states are heard on the global stage is essential for advancing ocean sustainability and resilience in the face of climate challenges.
