The RFNS Timo, a recent addition to the Republic of Fiji Navy, has encountered damage due to a docking incident while arriving at the Walu Bay Navy Pier. This incident occurred just five months after the previous vessel, the RFNS Puamau, grounded in the Fulaga Passage. The RFNS Timo was gifted by the Australian government, replacing the decommissioned Puamau that had suffered a significant accident in June, costing approximately $18 million.

During the docking operation, the vessel sustained minor damage to its port-side stern above the waterline. Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, attributed the mishap to a combination of gusty winds and the restricted space in the docking area, compounded by the presence of nearby commercial vessels. Furthermore, he did not dismiss the possibility of unprofessional conduct, as there were allegations that some crew members may have been intoxicated during the event.

In response to this incident, Commodore Tawake stated that personnel involved in any unprofessional behavior have been detained, and a formal investigation is underway to gather all relevant details and address any operational shortcomings. Within 24 hours following the incident, navy engineers conducted a detailed assessment and began repairs, which are reportedly close to completion. This swift action is intended to ensure the RFNS Timo can return to operational service promptly.

The Commodore emphasized the commitment to accountability and the review of operational protocols and crew training to enhance procedures and prevent similar occurrences in the future. He also expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the Australian Government within the framework of the Vuvale Partnership. Despite the challenges posed by this recent incident, he assured the public that the structural integrity of the RFNS Timo remains intact, positioning the vessel to be fully operational soon.

This incident serves not only as a learning moment for the Fiji Navy but also highlights the importance of continuous improvement in safety and professionalism in maritime operations. With prompt investigations and repairs, there lies an opportunity for growth and enhancement within the navy’s practices, ensuring readiness for future operations.

In summary, while the RFNS Timo experienced an unfortunate incident, the proactive approach taken by the Republic of Fiji Navy indicates a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence, promoting a hopeful outlook for the future of the fleet.
