Edward Nand, currently serving a life sentence, has found himself facing new murder charges connected to the death of Nadi resident Afroz Khan. The Suva High Court has directed Nand to submit an alibi notice regarding the alleged events that transpired between November 27 and December 2 of the previous year. Nand has denied involvement in Khan’s murder, asserting that he was not present at the scene.

The prosecution claims that Nand, alongside co-accused Semi Naisevunivai and Viliame Vulawalu, brutally attacked Khan with a wheel spanner before drowning him in the Waisere River in Tailevu. Reports indicate that Khan was kidnapped in November 2024, and his body was discovered shortly after in the river.

During the recent proceedings, the three accused appeared before the court for the consolidation of their charges, with the state submitting amended information related to the case. The case has gained attention due to significant community concerns regarding violence, particularly as it follows Nand’s previous homicide conviction involving Narend Chand, a victim of an online catfishing scam.

The consolidation of charges is seen as a necessary step in bringing all related incidents under one case for clarity and efficiency. Legal Aid representatives did not oppose the consolidation, while Nand informed the court that he plans to represent himself, although he was advised by Justice Pita Bulamainivalu to seek legal counsel to navigate the complexities of the proceedings.

As the legal battle continues, the case has become emblematic of broader societal issues surrounding violence and the risks associated with online interactions. The families of both Khan and Chand hold onto hope for justice, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in online engagements and the need for protective measures in society.

The case has been adjourned until April 25, highlighting the ongoing commitment of the judicial system to provide clarity and justice. This situation serves as a reminder of the critical need for community awareness and the efforts required to combat rising violence linked to deceptive practices in the digital age.
