A total investment of $170,800.26 has been made in the newly inaugurated Lagilagi Multipurpose Court located in Raiwaqa, which was officially opened by Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru. The ceremony took place yesterday, with Saukuru expressing his enthusiasm about providing the Fijian populace with more avenues for sport and recreation.

During his address, Saukuru highlighted the significance of the multi-purpose court as a new and modern facility for the community, stating, “Whether you play volleyball, basketball, or netball, you now have a modern facility worthy of your community.” The minister emphasized the positive impact this space will have not only on the residents of Lagilagi Housing but also on those from neighboring areas such as Veiquwawa, Raiwaqa, and Vatuwaqa.

Saukuru reaffirmed the government’s responsibility toward nurturing youth development throughout the nation, noting, “This demonstrates how much your government cares about you not only as future leaders of the country but also as current innovators and change-makers.” By investing in infrastructure that supports sports, the government is showcasing its commitment to equipping the youth with the necessary resources for success and personal growth.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the Public Rental Board in bringing the initiative to fruition, thanking the community for their support in enhancing youth development initiatives within public rental properties. Emphasizing the ownership of the facility, Saukuru urged the community, “Use it well. You have been entrusted as its custodians. Protect and maintain it diligently.”

This newly opened court aligns with ongoing governmental initiatives that promote healthier lifestyles and community engagement through sports, similar to other recent developments across the Fijian landscape, such as multipurpose courts in areas like Tuatua, Labasa, and Vunidawa, which were also inaugurated with the intention of fostering youth involvement and enhancing sporting culture in underserved communities.

The establishment of such facilities not only paves the way for future sporting talent but also fosters a spirit of community, encouraging collaboration and teamwork among the youth. The emphasis on recreational spaces is indicative of a hopeful trajectory toward a healthier and more engaged population in Fiji.

This development reflects broader efforts towards enhancing sports infrastructure, creating a positive impact on local communities, and nurturing the next generation of Fijian leaders through active participation in sports.
