A collaborative effort between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Public Rental Board (PRB) has resulted in the inauguration of a multi-purpose court for the residents of Lagilagi housing in Raiwaqa. The official handover ceremony, led by Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, took place recently, marking a significant investment of approximately $170,800 in the facility designed to foster youth development and community engagement.
During the ceremony, Minister Saukuru highlighted the importance of the court, emphasizing that it offers much more than a space for sports; it serves as a catalyst for personal growth, community bonding, and the development of future leaders. “As our economy expands, we intend to provide more opportunities for the Fijian people, especially in areas that need them the most,” he remarked.
The new court is designed for various sports such as volleyball, basketball, and netball, making it a versatile space for competitions, training, and family gatherings. PRB general manager Timoci Naleba noted that the facility addresses a significant need for proper recreational spaces in the community, reinforcing the confidence and spirit among local youth.
Minister for Housing Maciu Nalumisa stressed that this initiative is part of a broader approach to enhance sporting facilities in housing estates across the country, ensuring that every individual has access to recreational spaces. He expressed a vision of fostering healthier lifestyles and community unity through sports, as highlighted in similar initiatives observed throughout Fiji, such as the multipurpose courts established in Labasa and other areas.
The establishment of this court not only promotes healthier lifestyles but also inspires hope for a united community through active participation in sports. By equipping the youth with modern facilities and opportunities for engagement, the government is paving the way for a promising future filled with potential and resilience, encouraging young Fijians to pursue their aspirations and passions in sports and community activities.
