For years, families in Ra have faced the painful challenge of traveling long distances to ensure their loved ones have a proper burial. However, recent developments indicate that this burden may soon lessen. Minister for Health, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, has announced that a new mortuary is nearing the final stages of approval, a project that is anticipated to transform the grieving process for many.
The initiative, championed by the Ra Chamber of Commerce and backed by the local community, is expected to provide much-needed relief to families who have long struggled in silence with the inadequacies of mortuary services. “For many years, families in Ra have had to travel long distances just to access mortuary services, and this project directly addresses those hardships,” Dr. Ratu Atonio emphasized.
With a budget of $250,000, the mortuary will have the capacity to accommodate 18 bodies and aims to offer comfort and dignity to grieving households. Equipped with modern refrigeration, proper sanitation facilities, and a dedicated family viewing room, the mortuary has been a long-awaited resource for many families in Ra.
Dr. Ratu Atonio explained that the agreement with the Ra Chamber of Commerce is currently with the Solicitor-General’s Office, which signifies a significant move forward in this vital project. Behind this effort is a strong sense of community, with local businesses, the diaspora, and families contributing to make this dream a reality. Their collaborative efforts underline the power of communities to tackle enduring challenges when they unite with government support.
Once the mortuary is operational, the Ra Chamber of Commerce will take on the responsibilities of funding, servicing, and maintaining the facility for 15 years, while the Ministry will ensure staffing and utilities. “The Ra Chamber of Commerce will fully fund and maintain the facility for 15 years after it opens, showing the strength of community partnership,” highlighted the Minister.
The facility is projected to be completed by February 2026, bolstering Ra’s overall disaster preparedness and providing families with the dignity they deserve while saying goodbye to their loved ones. Minister Ratu Atonio reassured Parliament that this project is not merely about infrastructure; it symbolizes a commitment to restoring dignity, alleviating hardship, and honoring the people of Ra during their most vulnerable times.
