Newly appointed Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has expressed her dedication to tackling the ongoing challenges facing society. During her swearing-in ceremony at the State House, she emphasized the significant role of her ministry, stating, “This is a responsibility I take with the utmost humility, knowing that the work of this ministry touches the very heart of our nation—our families, our communities, and our future.”
Kiran took a moment to acknowledge her predecessor, Lynda Tabuya, praising her dedication and contributions to the ministry. “Her leadership has laid a foundation upon which we will continue to build,” Kiran stated, emphasizing the collaborative nature of their mission.
Highlighting the importance of empowering women and protecting children, she declared, “This journey is not the work of one individual but a collective effort sustained over time.” Kiran expressed her gratitude to Tabuya, saying, “Vinaka vakalevu—your efforts have paved the way for us to take this mission forward.”
She stated that the ministry’s purpose extends beyond merely administering policies. It is also about advocating for change and ensuring that no one in Fiji is left behind. Kiran acknowledged that women are essential to families, communities, and the workforce, but many still face barriers to equality and opportunity. She committed to enhancing initiatives that support women’s economic empowerment, promote gender equality, and encourage female leadership across all sectors.
In her address, Kiran emphasized the importance of children, declaring them “our greatest treasure.” As minister, she pledged to prioritize their protection, education, and overall well-being, with plans to combat child abuse, support vulnerable families, and cultivate environments where every child can grow in safety and hope.
The new minister also stressed the need to support marginalized groups, including the elderly and individuals with disabilities, promising to enhance social protection programs to ensure inclusivity and responsiveness to community needs.
Overall, Kiran’s vision reflects a hopeful commitment to fostering societal change and championing the rights of vulnerable populations in Fiji. With her leadership, there is a renewed sense of optimism that positive strides can be made toward equality, safety, and opportunity for all citizens.
