Sashi Kiran, the newly appointed Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, has expressed her dedication to tackling ongoing societal issues. During her swearing-in ceremony at the State House, Kiran emphasized the significance of her role, stating, “This is a responsibility I take with the utmost humility, knowing that the work of this ministry touches the very heart of our nation—our families, our communities, and our future.”
She acknowledged the efforts of her predecessor, Lynda Tabuya, highlighting her commitment to the ministry. Kiran stated, “Her leadership has laid a foundation upon which we will continue to build,” recognizing the importance of teamwork in empowering women, protecting children, and supporting vulnerable populations.
Kiran stressed the critical role women play in society, describing them as the backbone of families and communities. She pledged to advance initiatives that foster women’s economic empowerment and ensure gender equality, creating avenues for women to take on leadership roles.
In her address, she underscored the importance of prioritizing children’s protection, education, and well-being, vowing to combat child abuse and support families in need. Kiran also committed to advocating for those often overlooked, such as the elderly and individuals with disabilities. She plans to review and enhance social safety programs to make them more inclusive and effective for those they serve.
This fresh leadership brings with it a hopeful outlook, promoting a vision for an inclusive society where everyone’s needs are acknowledged and addressed. By focusing on empowerment and support for the most vulnerable, Kiran’s ministry has the potential to effect meaningful change in Fiji.
