A businessman by the name of Azad Ali, who operates the Island Medical Centre Pte Ltd, as well as an accommodation property and car dealership, is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a mini private hospital in Suva. This decision was catalyzed by experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic and a significant personal health challenge he faced in late 2023 when he underwent surgery for a cancerous growth.
Ali established the Island Medical Centre in mid-2022, which initially focused on eye care, and has recently expanded its services to include general medical care. As of March 6, the medical center has started catering to a broader range of health needs. Ali’s vision for the mini-hospital includes the establishment of three operating theatres dedicated to eye surgeries, general minor surgeries, and diabetic foot care. He proudly stated that the medical centre has achieved a 100 percent success rate in eye surgeries and expressed a commitment to continue improving healthcare services for the local population.
This initiative aligns with the growing trend in Fiji towards enhancing healthcare capabilities, particularly for health tourism, as highlighted by similar developments in the region. The Pacific Specialist Healthcare Hospital, for instance, has made significant strides in establishing a cardiology department equipped to perform complex procedures, recently achieving a milestone by completing its first successful open-heart surgery. Such advancements underscore the ongoing efforts to boost medical infrastructure, not just for local residents but also to attract international medical tourists looking for high-quality, affordable care.
Ali’s project reflects a hopeful outlook toward collaboration in healthcare that could benefit the population of Suva by providing more local treatment options and building upon the successes of other medical facilities in Fiji. Investing in local healthcare infrastructure appears to be a positive step forward, ultimately aiming to elevate the standard of medical services across the nation and contribute to Fiji’s growing reputation as a potential health tourism destination.
Overall, this movement toward improved healthcare facilities in Fiji is a hopeful sign for both the local economy and residents, as communities benefit from better access to medical care.
