The National Taskforce to Address Pornography is taking significant steps to ensure that children under 17 have restricted access to pornographic content. In addition to this initiative, the taskforce is also planning to impose restrictions on certain social media platforms and dark websites. This comprehensive approach is part of a broader strategy to enhance online safety, particularly for young individuals.

Co-chair of the taskforce, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, stated that they are reviewing successful legislative measures from Australia and are looking to strengthen the Online Service Commission Act. The taskforce is expected to finalize its work within the next 12 months.

Earlier this week, the Ministry for Women, Children, and Social Protection held discussions on proposed laws during the taskforce’s second meeting. This meeting included a presentation on a Gender Analysis of the Online Safety Act by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and highlighted the legal ramifications of child pornography under the Child Care and Protection Act 2024.

The taskforce has pinpointed key action areas, which include restricting minors’ access to pornography, developing strategies to decrease overall pornography consumption, and providing support for survivors of abuse. Kamikamica emphasized the allocation of additional police resources to tackle cybercrime and prevent the circulation of harmful content.

He criticized the previous government for neglecting this pressing issue, asserting that the current administration, led by the People’s Coalition, is determined to make meaningful changes affecting everyone in the community.

This initiative represents a proactive approach to safeguarding children and promoting healthier online environments. With strong legislative support and increased resources, there is potential for significant improvements in the realm of online safety.

Overall, these developments reflect a growing awareness of the need to combat the negative impacts of pornography on society, particularly on its most vulnerable members, thereby fostering a safer digital space for future generations.
