Levuka Town is setting a remarkable standard for the residents of Ovalau Island and the Lomaiviti Group with the inauguration of its new municipal market. The marketplace was officially opened last Friday by Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government.
This new market aims to serve not only the local communities of Ovalau but also those from Moturiki and the wider Lomaiviti Group. Minister Nalumisa expressed gratitude to all stakeholders who played a role in bringing the Levuka Market to fruition. He highlighted its vital role in fostering economic activity, stating, “It’s a market, busy with a lot of people and will generate income for market vendors.”
In addition, the ministry has provided a nine-ton truck to assist vendors in the delivery of fish and other goods within the town. The government allocated $180,000 for the purchase of this vehicle. Minister Nalumisa encouraged the community to embrace the new market, urging them to take ownership of this valuable resource. He remarked, “Make this market and take ownership of it. You have one of the best markets around Fiji. Take pride in your town, support one another and embrace opportunities that this new facility will bring.”
This new development not only signifies a boost in local trade but also represents a step forward for community cohesion and support in Ovalau. The positive impact of the Levuka Market is anticipated to resonate throughout the region, providing both economic benefits and opportunities for growth and collaboration among residents.
In a hopeful note, the establishment of the market symbolizes a commitment to enhancing local livelihoods and fostering a stronger sense of community. The future looks bright for Levuka and its surrounding areas as they leverage this new marketplace to spur progress and prosperity.
