The newly inaugurated $15 million Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies (PCMS) at Fiji National University (FNU) in Suva is set to enhance education, research, and innovation in the maritime field, with a special emphasis on sustainability and the Pacific Blue Economy.
During the center’s opening ceremony, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the center’s mission to integrate traditional navigation skills with contemporary technology, thereby equipping the next generation of maritime leaders with valuable knowledge and tools for their future careers.
FNU Vice Chancellor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba highlighted the center’s strategic alignment with national initiatives, such as the Pacific Blue Ocean 2050 strategy. This alignment aims to promote international collaboration and adapt educational curriculums to better prepare students for industry demands.
Additionally, the center is forging partnerships, including one with Fiji Water, to further enhance its programs and resources.
