The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to quickly resume operations following its reinstatement by the government last year. After a hiatus under the previous administration, PWD has recently enhanced its capabilities with the acquisition of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers, which were delivered in Suva on Wednesday.
The handover ceremony for the new machinery took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, attended by officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport. Ministry permanent secretary Paula Baleilevuka emphasized that the timely arrival of these machines would significantly improve infrastructure and foster capacity development.
Baleilevuka noted that these pieces of equipment form part of a new fleet aimed at elevating road standards and conditions, ultimately facilitating better access for economic activities. He stated, “These machines will also enhance our capacity to undertake road construction and maintenance works in rural and remote areas.”
The ministry received the following equipment:
– Two large excavators
– Two D6 bulldozers
– Two dumper trucks
– One flat-top truck
The total value of the eight machines is $1,627,104. For the current financial year, the Ministry has secured $5 million for the improvement and upgrading of rural roads. Baleilevuka mentioned that the new vehicles and equipment will be employed in forthcoming projects.
