Following significant criticism regarding the malfunctioning elevators at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM), the Ministry of Health (MOH) has announced that replacement lifts from the contracted supplier are expected to arrive in Fiji next month. This statement, released on Friday, acknowledged the concerns raised about the non-functional patient lift.
The MOH is actively collaborating with its contracted service providers and relevant government agencies, including the Ministry of Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services, to address the issues with the hospital’s lifts. The problematic elevator, located in the West Wing of CWMH, has been in operation for over 15 years. It was initially purchased from the OTIS Elevator Company of New Zealand, whose engineers are currently working on-site to restore its functionality. OTIS also holds the contract for servicing the lifts at the hospital.
In 2023, the ministry recognized the pressing need to replace the aging lifts at CWM Hospital. With funding approved by the government, the ministry has been engaged in the procurement process to replace all outdated lifts within the facility. The ministry emphasized that hospital lifts are specialized machinery designed for the unique demands of healthcare environments, capable of transporting patients, staff, and medical equipment while adhering to infection control standards.
The disruption caused by the non-functional lift has had a negative impact on patient care in the affected ward, leading to frustration among patients, their families, and healthcare staff. The MOH is appealing for patience from all affected as they work to enhance healthcare infrastructure across the nation.
This proactive response from the Ministry of Health is a positive step towards improving patient care and addressing safety and accessibility concerns in the hospital. The anticipated arrival of the replacement lifts not only aims to restore normal operations but also reflects a commitment to enhancing healthcare services for all.
In summary, the Ministry of Health is addressing the malfunctioning lifts at Colonial War Memorial Hospital with the arrival of replacements set for next month, aiming to improve patient care and healthcare service quality.
