Ilisapeci Matatolu has been named the new Chairperson of Tourism Fiji, as announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka. Matatolu brings over ten years of experience with the organization, previously holding the positions of Regional Director for Australia and North America from 2002 to 2013 when the entity was known as the Fiji Visitors Bureau.
In addition to her extensive tourism experience, Matatolu is currently pursuing Doctoral studies at the University of the South Pacific, focusing on indigenous women, tourism, and gender equality. She has contributed significantly to academic discourse through various publications on topics including entrepreneurship, quality of life, and innovation in tourism.
Minister Gavoka expressed confidence in Matatolu’s ability to lead, stating, “Her leadership will steer Tourism Fiji toward bold, innovative strategies responsive to global trends.” He believes that her appointment positions the organization well to fulfill national tourism objectives, especially in the context of ongoing recovery and growth in the tourism sector.
Matatolu succeeds Andre Viljoen, the former chairperson, during a transformative period for Fiji’s tourism, which has been experiencing significant revitalization following the pandemic. Her leadership is anticipated to contribute positively to Tourism Fiji’s efforts to innovate and adapt to ever-changing global tourism trends, which is essential for maintaining Fiji’s appeal as a prime travel destination.
This change in leadership comes at a time when the tourism industry is poised for potential growth, reflecting optimism for continued success in showcasing Fiji’s unique offerings on the global stage. The focus on innovative, sustainable tourism practices under Matatolu’s guidance holds promise for the sector’s future, aiming for resilience and inclusivity in tourism development.
