Namosi High Chief Ratu Suliano Matanitobua has been appointed as one of the vice chairs for the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), along with Na Tui Nayau and Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba. This decision was made during a meeting held today in Draiba, Suva, which continues into tomorrow.

The position of vice chair was previously held by the late Ratu Meli Saukuru, a beloved leader whose contributions were honored during the session. The meeting opened with remarks from President and Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who emphasized the vital role of the chiefs in serving the iTaukei people.

In addition to the appointments, discussions at the meeting also included the functions of the Fisheries and Lands Commission, highlighting the need for ongoing dialogue concerning the management of these resources. Members took a moment to remember the late Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, Turaga na Qaranivalu e Naitasiri, alongside Ratu Meli Saukuru, as a tribute to their legacies.

This gathering reflects a continual effort to address pressing issues affecting the iTaukei community. Previous similar meetings have demonstrated a commitment to fostering dialogue among chiefs regarding legislative and administrative matters, aimed at strengthening governance and promoting unity.

Ratu Suliano has expressed optimism about the direction of the GCC since its revival last year, noting a positive evolution in member engagement and a commitment to addressing socio-economic challenges. This hopeful outlook indicates a proactive approach within the council, emphasizing that open dialogue can lead to significant advancements for the iTaukei community’s welfare.

As the meeting progresses, there is a sense of hope for constructive discussions and solutions that will benefit the community in the long run.
