Cecil Browne, a former banker and a candidate for the People’s Alliance in the 2022 General Election, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC). Along with Browne, the commission has welcomed new board members Kelera Gadolo, Dr. Keshmeer Makun, and Adimaibole Waqainabete. The previous chairman, Isikeli Tikoduadua, and former deputy chair Romil Patel remain on the board but will now serve as deputy chair and commissioner, respectively.
Browne brings a wealth of experience in the financial sector, having held senior leadership roles such as Deputy General Manager at ANZ Fiji and General Manager of Corporate and Treasury at Bank South Pacific Fiji. In his first remarks as chairman, Browne emphasized the importance of competition and consumer protection, particularly in light of ongoing cost of living concerns. He stated, “I fully appreciate the responsibilities that this position brings with it. With the collective expertise of this exceptional team, we are well-positioned to address emerging challenges and deliver meaningful outcomes for consumers and businesses across Fiji.”
FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham welcomed the new board’s diverse expertise, highlighting that their collective experience will bolster the commission’s mission of promoting a fair marketplace. He expressed confidence that their efforts will lead to positive impacts for both consumers and businesses alike.
While the FCCC has undergone significant leadership transitions recently, the change is viewed as an opportunity for renewal and further advancements in regulatory practices. With Browne at the helm, there is optimism for the implementation of strategies that address consumers’ evolving needs, ensuring that the FCCC remains responsive to the economic realities facing Fijians today.
In summary, the new leadership at the FCCC marks a hopeful and positive direction for enhancing consumer protection and maintaining competitive markets in Fiji, aligning with the broader goals of economic integrity and sustainability. This transition offers the potential for impactful change as Browne and the new board members embark on their mission to serve the Fijian public effectively.
