New Leadership, Old Challenges: What’s Next for Fiji’s Police Force?

Spread the love

Mr. Rusiate Tudravu has officially taken on the role of the new Commissioner of Police (COMPOL). While his appointment is welcomed with optimism, it’s important to temper expectations regarding immediate changes within the Police Force and the broader criminal justice system. Many challenges faced by the department are the result of systemic issues that have developed over the years, and substantial progress will require dedicated effort over time.

Criticism has been levied at the process of appointing Tudravu, with suggestions that the Constitutional Officers Commission (CoC) might have better served the police force by allowing the Acting Commissioner, Mr. Juki Fong Chew, to continue in his position alongside Tudravu. The proposal of a dual leadership model, similar to having multiple Deputy Prime Ministers, is put forth as a way to tackle the backlog of issues more effectively.

The potential partnership between Tudravu and Fong could bring about significant improvements. With strategic collaboration, there’s hope that the police force can begin to make meaningful strides toward restoring public trust and enhancing operational efficiency.

This transition presents an opportunity for renewal within the police system, and with the right focus and resilience, the community may soon witness positive developments in law enforcement practices.
