Esera Fofō Tuisano has made a significant impact with his recent appointment as Ulu-o-Tokelau, or Head of State, by arriving at his first parliamentary session by boat from Fenuafala along with his daughter. His inauguration was marked by the traditional Fakanofoga ceremony, where he participated in local dances and rituals that celebrated his new leadership role.
Representing Fakaofo, one of Tokelau’s three atolls, Tuisano comes from a region that includes two major islets: Falē, home to the meeting house, and Fenuafala, which hosts crucial facilities such as the main hospital and school.
Previously acknowledged as a “waste champion” for his effective waste management initiatives, Tuisano has a rich political background, having served on the General Fono and taking on the role of Faipule in 2020. His leadership ability has been noted by Tokelau’s Administrator, Don Higgins, describing him as a “reluctant” politician who is still capable of guiding the nation effectively.
During the inauguration, Higgins praised Tuisano’s talent for fostering consensus and his sense of humor, expressing faith in his capacity to work for the best interests of Tokelau. Tuisano emphasized his commitment to understanding and representing the aspirations of his constituents, saying, “If I can facilitate the wishes and visions of my people, that would be a huge achievement for me.”
A core aspect of Tuisano’s vision is to instill pride among the Tokelauan youth, encouraging them to cherish their cultural heritage while looking forward to future possibilities. He regards Tokelau as his “heart and soul,” underscoring the necessity of unity and progress for this small island nation.
This leadership shift represents a hopeful new era for Tokelau, founded on Tuisano’s pledge to strengthen community ties and advance shared objectives. His focus on youth empowerment and resilience reflects a broader ambition for a vibrant future for the islands.
As Tuisano navigates his leadership journey, there is an optimistic outlook that his guidance will lead Tokelau to a bright and united future.
