In a traditional and solemn ceremony held yesterday, Ratu Tevita Mara Latianara was appointed as the Turaga na Vunivalu o Korolevu, Serua, filling a leadership position that had been vacant for some time. The installation, which occurred on Serua Island, was witnessed by hundreds who gathered to celebrate this important cultural event.
The day began with a church service that included blessings for Ratu Tevita, and was followed by the Veivakatikori Vaka Vanua Ceremony. Many prominent figures attended the ceremony, including church leaders, family members, traditional elders, and various government representatives.
Government Minister Ifereimi Vasu spoke at the church service, highlighting the administration’s commitment to supporting traditional leadership. The i-Taukei Affairs Board also congratulated Ratu Tevita on his ascension, underscoring the vital role he will play in preserving customs, culture, and fostering unity within the Vanua Vakaturaga o Korolevu.
This moment marks a revitalization of traditional leadership, similar to recent installations in Fiji that aim to strengthen community bonds and cultural identities. The traditional transition is expected to not only reinvigorate the community spirit of Serua but also foster collaboration and resilience among residents.
As communities embrace new leadership through such ceremonies, there is a shared sense of hope and optimism about the future. Ratu Tevita’s installation symbolizes a renewed commitment to cultural traditions and community unity, paving the way for a stronger, more connected Serua moving forward.
The event reflects not just a ceremonial transition but a reaffirmation of cultural identity, laying a foundation for ongoing cooperation and relationship-building within the community.
