Former Vanuatu Mobile Force Commander Kalshem Bongran has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police (COMPOL), after successfully emerging from a competitive selection process involving seven other candidates. The appointment, effective from May 26, 2024, was confirmed by John Taleo, Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), and published in the Official Gazette.

Bongran, 53, from Southwest Bay in Malekula, was chosen following a rigorous interview process conducted by independent panellists who evaluated the shortlisted candidates, which also included Acting COMPOL Willie Samuel and Lieutenant Colonel Nicholson Ben, Acting Commander of the Vanuatu Mobile Force. His selection comes after the resignation of former COMPOL Robson Iavro, who transitioned to a role as a Member of Parliament.

The appointment process adheres to established procedures that mandate consultation with the Minister of Internal Affairs, Andrew Napuat, who supported the PSC’s recommendation. PSC Chairman Taleo expressed gratitude towards the President, the Minister, and the panellists for their commitment to ensuring a fair appointment process.

Bongran’s tenure as COMPOL is set for five years, with a performance review scheduled for the three-year mark. This leadership transition marks an opportunity for renewed focus on public safety and effective governance within the police force.

This development comes as Vanuatu continues to emphasize the importance of strong leadership in law enforcement, reflecting a proactive commitment to enhancing the efficiency and accountability of its police service. With Bongran at the helm, there is hope for positive changes that will bolster community trust in law enforcement.

In summary, the appointment of Commissioner Bongran not only fills a crucial leadership role but also signals a hopeful future for police governance in Vanuatu.
