Emmanuel Tjibaou has been elected as the new president of Union Calédonienne (UC), a significant player in New Caledonia’s pro-independence movement, during a recent congress held in the village of Mia, located near Canala on the east coast of Grande Terre. Tjibaou, 48, was the sole candidate for the position, taking over from Daniel Goa, who chose not to seek re-election due to health concerns after leading the party for 12 years.

Goa acknowledged the challenges his successor will face, particularly in fostering political awareness and training among the youth. He emphasized that the recent riots reflected a lack of political engagement and mentorship within the party, indicating that better support for young leaders within UC is essential for the movement’s future.

Tjibaou, who earlier this year was appointed as one of New Caledonia’s representatives in the French National Assembly, is seen as a moderate figure open to dialogue. His leadership could signal a potential softening of UC’s stance, perhaps fostering a more inclusive environment within the broader pro-independence movement, which is currently fragmented. Recently, two major factions within the pro-independence alliance, UPM and PALIKA, expressed their discontent with UC’s recent direction and distance themselves from the movement.

As New Caledonia grapples with rebuilding after the violent unrest earlier this year, crucial political discussions are set to resume in December 2024. These talks aim to reach an inclusive political agreement by March 2025, which could shape New Caledonia’s political future amid different proposed concepts such as “shared sovereignty” and “internal federalism.”

Tjibaou, the son of the notable pro-independence leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou, assumes his new role at a pivotal time, and there’s hope that his election may lead to a more united stance among pro-independence factions and a constructive dialogue with all political parties involved.

This development signifies a potential turning point for New Caledonia’s political landscape, fostering unity and active participation among the younger population in governance and independence efforts, ultimately paving the way for a more stable and prosperous future.
