The Public Service Commission (PSC) has officially appointed Dr. Vinesh Kumar as the new Permanent Secretary for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry. This appointment follows a comprehensive and transparent recruitment process, as confirmed by PSC Chairman Luke Rokovada. Dr. Kumar, who is currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji, was selected after interviews with five shortlisted candidates conducted on May 20, 2025.

Chairman Rokovada praised Dr. Kumar’s leadership skills and dedication to national service, stating, “We are confident he will bring a strong vision and effective leadership to this important portfolio.” This new role is seen as crucial for revitalizing the sugar sector and fostering inclusive programs that support Fiji’s diverse communities.

Dr. Kumar’s extensive experience includes a tenure as Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways from 2021 to 2023, and he has also held the position of Permanent Secretary for Special Projects in the Ministry of Sugar earlier this year. His appointment comes at a time when the sugar industry in Fiji is facing significant challenges, including production declines. As noted in recent discussions by Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh, Dr. Kumar’s leadership is expected to enhance governance and communication within the sector, potentially reinvigorating relationships with local farmers and stakeholders impacted by these changes.

In light of the evolving dynamics within the sugar industry and its importance to Fiji’s economy, this leadership change brings hope for improved collaboration and effectiveness in addressing the industry’s pressing challenges. The PSC maintains a strong commitment to fostering leadership that is representative of Fiji’s multi-ethnic framework, which is increasingly vital as the nation navigates economic revitalization efforts.
