The Public Service Commission, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s consent, has appointed Navin Raj Shayam as the new Permanent Secretary for Education, effective mid-July this year. Chairman of the Commission, Luke Rokovada, highlighted Shayam’s extensive experience in the education sector, having served as Principal and Head of School at Jai Narayan College for a decade.
Shayam’s educational qualifications include a degree in Science and a Master’s in Business Administration, both from the University of the South Pacific. His appointment is not just a significant milestone in his career, but it also reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing leadership within the Ministry of Education.
Rokovada underscored the importance of Shayam’s appointment as part of ongoing efforts to improve educational governance and address challenges within the sector. This move comes in light of earlier announcements regarding changes within the education ministry, including the temporary role of Ratu Meli Nacuva as Acting Permanent Secretary for Education, who will continue to oversee his responsibilities in Youth and Sports.
Such appointments are seen as a proactive step towards nurturing educational frameworks that promise to benefit future generations in Fiji. The focus on experienced educational leaders indicates a hopeful outlook for the country’s educational reforms. As the new Permanent Secretary, Shayam is expected to bring innovative strategies to enhance the quality and accessibility of education across the nation, ultimately contributing to a brighter future for students.
