Filipe Batiwale, a well-regarded lawyer based in Australia, has taken on the role of Commissioner for the Online Safety Commission Fiji. Mr. Batiwale is a senior lawyer with a specialization in commercial law, cyber law, and digital asset protection, and he holds a current practicing certificate in Australia.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Cooperatives, Micro, SMEs, and Communication, Manoa Kamikamica, highlighted Mr. Batiwale’s extensive experience in cyber law and digital asset protection, deeming him an essential asset to the commission. His appointment is effective immediately.
“Mr. Batiwale’s expertise in online safety and commitment to protecting the digital rights of all users will further our mission to create a safer internet for everyone,” Mr. Kamikamica stated.
Mr. Batiwale, a graduate of the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Laws, is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the commission’s policies, spearheading educational initiatives, and advocating for stronger protections for online users.
Receiving his new position, Mr. Batiwale expressed, “I am deeply honoured to be appointed as Fiji’s Online Safety Commissioner. I look forward to serving the people of Fiji and addressing the challenges we face in the online space. The growing prevalence of online harm underscores the importance of the Commission’s work, and there is much to be done to create safer digital environments. My focus will be on ensuring the Commission effectively fulfills its functions under the Online Safety Act, working collaboratively with stakeholders to promote accountability, education, and responsible online interactions.”
