Caroline Pickering will begin her role as the director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) on January 1. Her appointment follows a recommendation from the National Anti-Money Laundering Council.

Currently serving as the manager of policy and compliance with the Fiji FIU, Pickering will succeed Razim Buksh, who retired earlier in 2023. Governor Arif Ali expressed confidence in Ms. Pickering’s capabilities, stating she is the ideal candidate to guide the FIU through its next phase of development.

With over 25 years of professional experience, Ms. Pickering brings substantial expertise and strategic leadership to the position. Her background will be crucial in enhancing the unit’s performance in Fiji’s increasingly digital financial environment. She has been a part of the FIU since 2006, where she played a key role in establishing Fiji’s regulatory and supervisory framework to address money laundering and financial crime.

This leadership transition marks a positive step for the FIU, ensuring that the organization is well-prepared to tackle emerging challenges in the financial sector and continue its important work in safeguarding Fiji’s economy.

In a world where financial systems are continually evolving, Ms. Pickering’s extensive experience offers a hopeful outlook for the future of financial intelligence in Fiji. Her leadership is poised to foster innovation and strengthen the country’s defenses against financial crimes.
