Cecil Browne, a former banker and candidate from the People’s Alliance during the 2022 General Election, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC). This appointment marks a significant change in leadership within the commission, which is now comprised of a newly structured six-member board that includes Kelera Gadolo, Dr. Keshmeer Makun, and Adimaibole Waqainabete. Former chairman Isikeli Tikoduadua and deputy chair Romil Patel have been retained in their positions but will now serve as deputy chair and commissioner, respectively.

Browne brings a wealth of experience from the financial sector, having held prominent roles such as Deputy General Manager at ANZ Fiji and General Manager of Corporate and Treasury at Bank South Pacific Fiji. He demonstrated his commitment to addressing the pressing issues of competition and consumer protection, especially in light of the ongoing cost of living crisis, which he identified as a top priority for the FCCC. Browne stated, “I fully appreciate the responsibilities that this position brings with it. With the collective expertise of this exceptional team, we are well-positioned to address emerging challenges.”

Joel Abraham, the FCCC Chief Executive, welcomed the new board and underlined the importance of their diverse expertise in strengthening the commission’s mission to build a fair marketplace. He expressed confidence that their collaborative efforts would lead to positive impacts for businesses and consumers across Fiji.

The transition to Browne’s leadership is seen as an optimistic turning point for the FCCC. His extensive background combined with the experience of the new board members is expected to enhance consumer advocacy and market fairness, fostering an equitable economic environment for all Fijians. The collective vision and strategic goals of the board hold promise for significant positive changes that address the evolving needs of consumers and businesses alike in Fiji.

Overall, this new beginning for the FCCC under Browne’s chairmanship signifies hope for improved regulatory practices that prioritize consumer rights and competition, paving the way for a more robust economic landscape in Fiji.
