The Public Service Commission (PSC) has officially appointed Dr. Vinesh Kumar as the new permanent secretary for the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry. This decision, made in agreement with the Prime Minister, follows a thorough and transparent recruitment process that was conducted in May 2025.
PSC Chairman Luke Rokovada reported that the selection was based on merit, with Dr. Kumar emerging as the top candidate after interviews with five shortlisted applicants on May 20. Dr. Kumar’s appointment was endorsed by Prime Minister on June 12, 2025.
Dr. Kumar, who has substantial experience in public service and has held previous significant roles, including Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways, is seen as a promising leader who will strengthen the ministry’s efforts. His extensive background in leadership, governance, and policy implementation is expected to foster revitalization within the struggling sugar sector and promote inclusive initiatives that cater to Fiji’s diverse communities.
Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, has confirmed Dr. Kumar’s appointment while stating that the former acting permanent secretary, Reshmi Kumari, will return to her previous role as director of policy research within the Ministry of Sugar. This leadership change is viewed as a positive step towards improved governance and communication in the sugar industry, which has been facing challenges, including production declines.
In light of these developments, there is hope that Dr. Kumar’s leadership will rejuvenate relationships between the ministry and local farmers, ultimately working towards a stronger sugar industry that is more responsive to the needs of all Fijians.
