Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau has announced the appointment of Seru Soderberg as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF). Tuisawau confirmed to Fiji One News that he has endorsed Soderberg’s candidacy, expressing confidence in his ability to lead WAF into the future.

Soderberg brings valuable experience to the role, having served as the Chief Operating Officer and Acting CEO since March of this year. Under his guidance, significant progress has been made in enhancing Fiji’s water and wastewater systems, focusing on infrastructure development, asset optimization, and service delivery improvements. Tuisawau highlighted that Soderberg’s leadership will be vital for implementing the Water Sector Strategy 2050 and the National Development Plan for water and wastewater services in Fiji.

This appointment follows the earlier announcement by Dr. Amit Chanan, the former CEO, that he would not renew his contract, which ends in March 2025. Chanan’s leadership has been marked by the achievement of major milestones, including the completion of the Viria Water Treatment Plant and the development of an ambitious $8.5 billion investment plan for sustainable water and sanitation services over the next thirty years.

The shift in leadership is framed positively, offering fresh opportunities for innovative approaches to enhance water services. This could significantly impact the community’s well-being by ensuring the ongoing sustainability and efficiency of Fiji’s critical water infrastructure. With Soderberg at the helm, there is a hopeful outlook for continued progress in addressing water and sanitation challenges in Fiji, fostering resilience for future generations.
