Ilisapeci Matatolu has been appointed as the new chairperson of Tourism Fiji, succeeding Andre Viljoen, who recently resigned from his position and as CEO of Fiji Airways. Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka announced Matatolu’s appointment, highlighting her extensive background in destination marketing and tourism, particularly during her previous role as the regional director for Australia and North America with the Fiji Visitors Bureau.

Matatolu holds a tourism degree from James Cook University and a Master of Arts from the University of the South Pacific, where she also lectured in tourism and hospitality. Minister Gavoka emphasized that her leadership comes at a crucial time for the Fijian tourism sector, which is on the path to recovery and growth post-pandemic. He expressed confidence that Ms. Matatolu’s innovative approach will help Tourism Fiji adapt to global market trends and demands.

The appointment of Matatolu reflects a period of change within the tourism sector, which is looking to build upon the foundations laid by her predecessor, Viljoen. His departure marks the end of an era, but there is optimism surrounding Matatolu’s leadership, especially as Fiji’s tourism seeks to innovate and engage with a broader range of international visitors.

Adding to this positive sentiment, the Minister noted that this transition allows for fresh perspectives and strategies that can help showcase Fiji’s unique offerings more effectively on the global stage. With ongoing efforts towards sustainable and inclusive tourism practices, there is great potential for growth and enhanced resilience in the industry moving forward.
