New Leadership at PINA: A Turning Point for Pacific Media?

Veteran Tongan journalist Kalafi Moala has been elected as the President of the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA). In a closely contested election, Moala received 22 out of 36 votes, defeating the outgoing president Kora Nou from Papua New Guinea.

Leilani Reklai from Palau was elected as Vice President after garnering 29 votes, surpassing rival candidate Iliesa Tora.

The elections took place at the picturesque Okioki Mai Clifftop Cafe and Bar on the last day of the week-long PINA Media Summit. This event featured extensive discussions on significant media topics including press freedom, the challenges posed by new technologies, and the role of women in Pacific media.

The election also indicated a shift in leadership dynamics, featuring three women on the seven-member board, an increase from two in the previous term. Moala expressed his appreciation for the confidence placed in him and acknowledged Nou’s service, underlining the need for continuity for PINA’s success.

“I accepted this nomination with reluctance,” Moala stated, expressing hope for a younger or female candidate. However, he committed to serving only one term to pave the way for new leadership.

He emphasized the importance of consistent leadership within PINA, suggesting that former presidents could continue to guide their successors. Moala urged the need for stronger relationships with media organizations in Samoa and Micronesia and acknowledged the historical tensions between Fiji and Samoa.

“We need to foster closer ties with Samoa. I’m dedicated to visiting these regions to engage members,” he stated, also highlighting the necessity of connecting with diaspora media in New Zealand, Australia, and the United States.

“There are more Tongans living abroad than in Tonga,” he said, advocating for the full integration of diaspora media into PINA and dismissing the notion of these outlets being mere “associates.”

In his farewell address, Nou expressed satisfaction with his tenure as PINA President, categorizing it as both challenging and rewarding. “It’s been a journey of personal and professional growth, and I appreciate the support from everyone during my time,” he noted, acknowledging ongoing challenges for press freedom in the Pacific region.

The newly elected PINA board comprises:

– Neville Choi (Media Council of PNG and National Media Associations Representative)
– Esther Pavihi (Niue Media Association and TV Representative)
– Katalina Tohi (Tonga BroadCom Radio Representative, retained)
– Fred Wesley (Fiji Times Editor, Print Representative, retained)
– Robert Iroga (Online Representative, retained, previously Vice President)
– Lavenia Lativerata (Coordinator of Women in Media Fiji and Senior Journalist at MaiTV)
