Lisiate Fotofili has been appointed as Acting Deputy Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), effective February 19, 2025. His appointment comes at a pivotal moment when current FICAC Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, is on leave due to ongoing inquiries regarding her previous role and potential misconduct.

With a respected legal career spanning 18 years, Fotofili brings extensive experience to his new position. Having served for 11 years as a prosecutor at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, he has handled high-profile cases including murder, rape, and fraud. Additionally, he spent nearly eight years as a Resident Magistrate overseeing various court cases, showcasing his broad expertise in both criminal and civil matters.

Fotofili holds multiple academic qualifications, including a Postgraduate Certificate in Corruption Studies from the University of Hong Kong and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of the South Pacific. His rich professional background makes him well-suited to lead FICAC during this critical period.

As FICAC navigates challenges, including a recent raid at the Election Commission linked to ongoing investigations involving Malimali, Fotofili’s appointment is seen as a vital step towards reinforcing integrity and transparency in Fiji. FICAC aims to restore public trust while continuing its mission to combat corruption effectively.

The leadership transition is viewed with optimism, as Fotofili’s experience could foster an environment of accountability. It represents a fresh commitment to ethical governance, potentially marking a hopeful turn in Fiji’s efforts to uphold the rule of law and combat corruption within its institutions.
