Former banker Cecil Browne has been appointed as the new chairman of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), following his candidacy with the People’s Alliance in the 2022 General Election. Alongside Browne, the commission welcomes new board members Kelera Gadolo, Dr. Keshmeer Makun, and Adimaibole Waqainabete, while retaining former chairman Isikeli Tikoduadua and former deputy chair Romil Patel in new roles as deputy chair and commissioner, respectively.
Browne brings a wealth of experience in finance, having served in prominent positions including Deputy General Manager at ANZ Fiji and General Manager of Corporate and Treasury at Bank South Pacific Fiji. He expressed gratitude for his appointment, emphasizing the importance of competition and consumer protection amid rising living costs. Browne noted, “I fully appreciate the responsibilities that this position brings with it. With the collective expertise of this exceptional team, we are well-positioned to address emerging challenges.”
FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham welcomed the new board, recognizing the significance of their diverse expertise in strengthening the organization’s mission to build a fair marketplace. Abraham, who previously announced his departure from the FCCC, highlighted that this change presents a crucial opportunity for continuous improvement in safeguarding consumer rights and promoting effective competition. The transition into new leadership, with Browne at the helm, brings optimism for further advancements in regulatory practices that benefit both consumers and businesses across Fiji.
In light of this transition, there is hope for Browne’s leadership to foster an environment that adapts to the changing needs of consumers, ensuring that FCCC’s initiatives remain aligned with the economic realities facing Fijians today. The collective vision of the new board is poised to deliver meaningful outcomes that could positively impact the economic landscape in Fiji.
