High Court judge Usaia Ratuvili has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), marking a significant step towards stabilizing the leadership of the commission. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced the decision, although Mr. Ratuvili has yet to formally accept the role. The position has remained unfilled since the resignation of Barbara Malimali, who currently serves as the FICAC Commissioner.
Prime Minister Rabuka stated, “That has now been finalized, and Justice Ratuvili has been confirmed to be the chair of the Electoral Commission.” He also mentioned that there will be further confirmation regarding Mr. Ratuvili’s acceptance of the position and any additional allowances he may receive as a sitting judge, which will be determined by an independent committee.
With Ratuvili’s potential acceptance, there is hope for progress on the long-awaited finalization of the 2022 Glitch Report. This report looks into technical issues related to past elections and its completion is anticipated to enhance the electoral process moving forward. “So, they’ll be very busy, both the commission and the Supervisor of Elections office,” said Mr. Rabuka.
This development highlights a commitment to strengthening electoral integrity and addressing past inefficiencies within the system, indicating a positive move toward improved governance in the country.
