Manjula Devi has been appointed as the acting CEO of the Ba Town Council following a directive from Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa. This leadership transition arrives during a period of unrest, as council employees recently staged a protest, ceasing work due to issues surrounding unauthorized pay deductions and unfulfilled promises of a 10% salary increase that had been anticipated under the previous acting CEO, Moshim Khan.

Minister Nalumisa has stressed the importance of ensuring that special administrators do not interfere with council operations, highlighting the need for effective governance and improved communication in local councils. On her first day in office, Ms. Devi engaged in discussions with union representatives, including Satish Chandra, to address the workers’ concerns. Notably, following her appointment, the protesting workers returned to their duties.

In her address, Ms. Devi indicated that only one employee’s pay was impacted by recent deductions, which occurred due to a lack of prior consultation with the union concerning salary adjustments. Looking ahead, there are ongoing discussions about drafting a memorandum of agreement with union representatives to delineate the necessary actions for implementing salary changes.

The swift return of employees to their roles signifies a positive step towards stabilizing the work environment and enhancing overall working conditions within the council. This indicates a joint commitment from both employees and management to improve communication efforts and resolve disputes in a constructive manner.

These recent developments underscore a larger trend in local governance, focusing on transparency and collaboration. The proactive measures being implemented by the Ba Town Council promise to foster better employee relations, ultimately benefiting the entire Ba community. This situation serves as a hopeful reminder of the potential for effective leadership to bring about positive change in local governance structures.
