Newly appointed head prefects of Drasa Secondary School, Khushnuma Saleha Mohammed and Ayush Prasad, have pledged to lead their school with diligence and integrity. Their induction ceremony took place in Lautoka, where 120 prefects were recognized for their new responsibilities.
Ms. Mohammed expressed that her previous roles as a prefect in Form 6 and a relieving prefect in Form 5 have prepared her for this significant position. She acknowledged her parents for their unwavering support, stating, “This position is very important to me as I will assist my teachers, the student council, and fellow heads to execute the tasks assigned to us.”
Head boy Ayush Prasad also shared his commitment to a leadership style that is collaborative and respectful, indicating a conscious effort to avoid being dictatorial. “Just last week I was appointed head boy by the teachers,” he noted with pride, as he celebrated this milestone with his family.
In a speech during the induction, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Biman Prasad emphasized the essence of leadership, urging the student leaders to wear their badges with humility and to prioritize service over power. “Your schoolmates, your friends, your teachers, your principal look up to you. They will rely on you to provide leadership in the school,” he asserted.
The leadership initiatives at Drasa Secondary School reflect a wider educational trend in Fiji, where student leaders are increasingly recognized for their roles in creating and maintaining positive school environments. Similar ceremonies across the nation have reinforced the importance of character, integrity, and community involvement.
Having emerged from such traditions, the new prefects at Drasa Secondary School not only aim to set a positive example but also to foster a collaborative environment that encourages peers to strive for excellence. Their commitment to leadership embodies hope and aspiration for their fellow students, reflecting a collective effort to enhance school culture and the overall learning experience.
