Lisiate Fotofili has been appointed as the Acting Deputy Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Previously serving as a Resident Magistrate in Tavua and Rakiraki Magistrates Courts from 2018 until 2024, Fotofili was most recently associated with the Nasinu Magistrates Court prior to this new role.
Fotofili’s academic credentials include a Postgraduate Certificate in Corruption Studies from the University of Hong Kong, a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice, and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of the South Pacific. FICAC expressed confidence in his leadership, stating, “FICAC remains committed to upholding integrity and transparency in Fiji. The appointment of Fotofili further strengthens its leadership in the ongoing fight against corruption.”
His appointment comes in the context of significant developments within FICAC, as they continue to address corruption in the country. Recently, a raid was conducted at the Election Commission, which resulted in the confiscation of documents linked to an investigation involving the previous Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, who has faced allegations of abuse of office.
While Malimali’s situation raises concerns, the appointment of Fotofili is seen as a proactive step towards reinforcing integrity and tackling corruption effectively within Fiji’s institutions. As FICAC navigates these challenges, leadership changes like this aim to restore public trust and demonstrate a strong commitment to ethical governance.
