Selina Kuruleca, the new Permanent Secretary for Justice, has remarked on the positive atmosphere at her new workplace, emphasizing that it is “toxic-free.” Ms. Kuruleca was transitioned from her previous role at the Ministry of Education last month, a move directed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

Her reassignment was anticipated due to reported leadership tensions between her and the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro. On July 11, Mr. Radrodro publicly expressed his concerns regarding Ms. Kuruleca’s appointment as Permanent Secretary of Education. The Public Service Commission had earlier appointed her in May.

During her speech at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions’ Annual Prosecution Conference in Sigatoka, Ms. Kuruleca openly shared her experiences in her new role, highlighting that her time so far has been enjoyable and free from toxicity.

Ms. Kuruleca faced criticism when she was appointed to the education sector, particularly from the Fijian Teachers Association and the Fiji Teachers Union, who questioned her experience and suitability for the position. Despite the challenges, at the end of July, Mr. Radrodro acknowledged the Prime Minister’s decision, indicating a respect for the appointment.

This transition marks a constructive change for Ms. Kuruleca, and her remarks suggest a hopeful environment where she can thrive, fostering collaboration and progress within the Justice Ministry. The emphasis on a positive work culture is a promising indicator of her leadership approach moving forward.

In summary, Selina Kuruleca is settling well into her new role as Permanent Secretary for Justice, having transitioned from the Ministry of Education amid leadership disputes, while emphasizing the importance of a healthy work environment.
