The Ministry of Education is set to reintroduce interviews for Year 13 students interested in enrolling in teacher training institutions across Fiji. This initiative will be carried out in partnership with Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS).
Education Minister Aseri Radrodro expressed enthusiasm about this initiative, stating it offers an excellent opportunity for recent graduates who are keen to enter the teaching profession and contribute to Fiji’s educational future. He emphasized the growing need for qualified teachers and the importance of rigorous training programs tailored to attract passionate candidates.
This initiative stems from the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which aims to enhance collaboration among TTIs, stakeholders, and the Ministry of Education to ensure graduates are equipped with the essential skills and knowledge needed in the classroom.
Radrodro also pointed out the priority teaching areas where the Ministry currently faces shortages, including Primary Education, Special & Inclusive Education, and subjects like Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Computer Science.
Online applications for the TSLS must be submitted by January 31, 2025, and various scholarship programs will be available for Level 7 local schemes in both primary and secondary education. The Ministry, in conjunction with TTIs, will conduct two rounds of interviews, during which eligible students will receive notifications regarding dates and locations via email and phone.
This program not only aims to address the current teacher shortage in Fiji but also seeks to inspire a new generation of educators who are dedicated to making a meaningful impact on students’ lives. The reintroduction of the interview process represents a significant step toward enhancing the quality of education in the country.
