The Ministry of Sugar has successfully supported 325 farmers under its newly established farmers and lease premium assistance programme, aimed at facilitating access to land for sugarcane cultivation. Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, announced this development during his visit to Labasa. He highlighted that an additional 38 farmers are set to receive assistance, including 23 from the Labasa Mill region, five in Lautoka, and ten in the Rarawai mill area.

The initiative not only aids new farmers but also enhances land tenure security for current farmers, enabling them to grow their enterprises and contribute to the sustainability of the sugar industry. Minister Singh emphasized the government’s understanding of the importance of secure land access for the industry’s long-term viability. He assured that ongoing consultation and strategic planning are in place to tackle land lease challenges, ensuring every farmer receives the necessary support.

In addition to securing land access, the ministry is also taking steps to modernize agricultural practices. With rising production costs and labor shortages in mind, the push for farm mechanization will be a key aspect of the modernization strategy. A total of 12 sugarcane planters and 16 fertilizer applicators are being distributed to various tractor service providers in the sector to enhance planting and fertilizing processes.

The farm mechanization grant program offers a 50% subsidy on these essential machines, making them more affordable for service providers who, in turn, will offer their services to farmers at lower rates, promoting more efficient farming practices. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce labor intensity and improve overall productivity across the industry.

During the event, Aiyub Khan, a sugarcane farmer from Labasa, received a grant worth $9,500 for a sugarcane planter and fertilizer applicator. Khan, who has been in sugarcane farming for over 15 years, expressed gratitude for the support, stating that the partnership enabled him to invest further in his operations. He believes mechanization is a crucial step towards smart farming, helping to address labor shortages.

This comprehensive approach reflects the government’s commitment to revitalizing the sugar industry in Fiji, enhancing productivity, and securing the future for sugarcane farmers. The reforms aim to cultivate a sustainable and competitive environment for the agricultural sector, ensuring long-term growth and development.

In summary, the Ministry of Sugar’s initiatives are poised to not only empower farmers with essential resources but also pave the way for technological advancements in the industry, which may lead to a more prosperous future for the sugarcane sector in Fiji.
