The Ministry of Education has announced a new initiative aimed at monitoring sporting events and the activities of sporting bodies and schools to ensure that students are not exploited or commercialized for the benefit of a select few. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro conveyed this important message during the closing of the Tailevu Zone Athletics Competition, emphasizing the need for greater accountability in how student-athletes are treated.

Radrodro pointed out that while school sports competitions at both primary and secondary levels generate significant revenue, the financial burden often falls on the students and their families. They are responsible for various costs, including food, transportation, uniforms, and tickets, without a meaningful return on their investment. This situation, he noted, predominantly benefits organizations rather than the athletes, marking a crucial point for a necessary change in approach.

Highlighting the dedication of the student-athletes, Radrodro praised their unwavering commitment and effort in training. However, he warned about the risks of injury and burnout when students are pushed beyond their limits in competitions that do not serve their best interests.

The Minister reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to safeguarding all students, not just academically but also in terms of their involvement in sports. He reminded school authorities and teachers of their responsibility to supervise students during sporting events, including during travel.

To the 800 athletes who competed in the Tailevu Zone meet, Radrodro offered congratulations and encouraged them to maintain focus as they prepare for the upcoming 2025 Fiji Secondary School Athletics Competition. He also expressed gratitude to parents and coaches for their support, urging ongoing collaboration to ensure a safe and fair environment for Fiji’s young athletes.

The proactive stance taken by the Ministry aligns with previous initiatives aimed at improving transparency and accountability in the management of funds associated with school sports. This reflects a broader commitment to enhancing the welfare of students and ensuring their participation in sports contributes positively to their development.

In a hopeful note, the focus on student welfare promises a brighter future for athletics in Fiji, fostering an environment where young athletes can thrive physically and mentally.
