The Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi has officially launched its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) chamber, representing a significant step forward in addressing chronic health issues in Fiji. This innovative service targets conditions such as chronic wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Biman Prasad officiated the launch, describing it as a milestone for improving health outcomes related to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly diabetes.

During his address, Professor Prasad highlighted the pressing healthcare crisis in Fiji, where diabetes leads to one amputation every 12 hours. He stated, “The launch of HBOT is a major step forward in improving health outcomes and reducing the need for amputations.” This service, operating 24/7, aims to enhance patient recovery times and significantly reduce the incidence of amputations associated with diabetes-related complications.

In addition to serving the local population, the HBOT chamber seeks to attract patients from other Pacific Island countries, positioning Fiji as a regional healthcare leader. Professor Prasad noted that this development aligns with Fiji’s commitment to enhance healthcare infrastructure and create opportunities for collaboration with regional healthcare providers, ultimately boosting medical tourism.

The launch coincided with the introduction of the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program, designed to offer healthcare discounts to active cane farmers. This initiative underscores the commitment to improving healthcare accessibility for rural communities.

In summary, the introduction of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at PSH Hospital signifies a proactive approach toward tackling the serious health challenges posed by chronic diseases in Fiji. By investing in advanced medical technologies and services, Fiji is paving the way for a healthier future, not only for its citizens but also for those from neighboring regions seeking quality care. This promising development enhances the overall quality of life and brings hope to many suffering from chronic conditions.
