The Public Rental Board (PRB) is set to spearhead a significant new housing project at Jittu Estate, aimed at increasing affordable housing for families in need. The board is actively inviting reputable construction firms to apply for the development of this initiative.
As outlined in the recent tender advertisement, the project will feature two four-story buildings on lot 1, Jittu Road, which will provide a total of 16 flats. This undertaking is particularly designed to support low-income families, especially those living in the informal Raiwaqa settlement, signaling a hopeful outlook for the beginning of the year.
This new project dovetails with previous efforts such as the successful Lagilagi Housing Project. Earlier this year, 36 families received keys to their newly constructed homes as part of this initiative, which was backed by a substantial government investment of around $16 million. The Lagilagi estate, home to over 400 individuals, has underscored the government’s commitment to improving living standards for vulnerable communities.
Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government, emphasized the need to prioritize housing opportunities for local residents. He acknowledged past challenges, including space constraints and management issues, but reassured that measures are being implemented to enhance housing solutions in the region.
The ongoing efforts at Jittu Estate represent a hopeful advancement towards meeting the urgent demand for affordable housing, specifically targeting families in informal settlements. Such positive initiatives showcase a dedicated commitment to fostering community stability and enhancing the wellbeing of families in the area.
